'ER' goes out with a two-part bang USA Today, April 3, 2003 By William Keck ER executive producer John Wells has scripted a two-part cliffhanger finale. The first part airs May 15; the second part, as next season's second episode. The episodes will feature only Noah Wyle and Goran Visnjic, as their characters, John Carter and Luka Kovac, journey to the Congo as part of a medical relief team. The story line kicks off with Visnjic's character volunteering to work with a non-governmental organization similar to Doctors Without Borders, and Carter joins him. "A lot of emergency-room physicians volunteer for these kinds of organizations and work in really difficult conditions in Third World countries that are undergoing civil war," Wells says. "So we wanted to explore that. It makes a compelling 'what happens?' over the summertime." Visnjic says, "We're going to have a lot of complicated things happen to us." Recalling Anthony Edwards' farewell episodes in Hawaii last year, Visnjic adds, "It's going to be much dirtier, much more jungle and much more rain."
As for his character, Wyle says Carter "goes with one idea of what the experience is going to be like and then upon arrival realizes that nothing could prepare him for this experience. He definitely comes back a changed guy."
