Question & answer with Paul Rudd

Sean Rosner

Published on Thu., December 11th, 2008

Since attending the University of Kansas in the late ’80s, actor Paul Rudd has gone on to have a successful career in Hollywood, with roles in the television series Friends, the cult classic Wet Hot American Summer, and blockbusters like Clueless, Anchorman and Knocked Up.

Rudd grew up in Overland Park, where he graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1987. He studied theater at the University, and later attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles.

Rudd took some time off from promoting his latest film, Role Models, to chat with the magazine of his alma mater.

Q: You attended the University of Kansas for two years. What were you like in college?

A: I had really long hair. I was a big INXS fan when I was in high school, and I was like, ‘Oh man, long hair is so sweet.’ It was terrible, looking back now, but it was kind of the look of the time. And then I had a jean jacket with a Patrick Nagel painting on the back. It was just full-on cheeseball mode. I’m pretty sure the jacket was acid-washed. I definitely had my own look. It wasn’t good, but it was my own.

Q: You used to DJ at bar mitzvahs before you got into acting. Did you have any other odd jobs before breaking into the business?

PAUL RUDD - RUDD ESCAPED ADAM ANT-INSPIRED FASHION DISASTER

Actor PAUL RUDD once tried to shave himself a receding hairline so he would look like his idol ADAM ANT - and he thanks his mum for stopping him from making a terrible fashion faux pas.
The 39-year-old former Friends actor was a massive fan of the Stand + Deliver star as a teenager in the 1980s, and almost went too far in his desire to copy his idol.
Rudd reveals, "I was in a big Adam Ant phase and I asked my mom if I could shave the front of my hair to give myself a receding hairline like Adam Ant.
"And she said, 'No f**king way am I going to let you do that!'
"I didn't get what a receding hairline was; I just thought it looked really cool."

SET VISIT: Paul Rudd Tells Jason Segel I Love You, Man!

The two comedic actors talk about their upcoming male bonding buddy comedy

The premise behind I Love You, Man sounds like an untapped comedy goldmine. It centers on sensitive, Emo-centric Peter (Paul Rudd) who finds himself distraught on the eve of his proposal to longtime ladylove Shandi Dawson (Rashida Jones). Pete has spent his entire life devoting himself to his romantic relationships, and now finds that he has no male friends. Thus, he sets out on a series of "Man Dates" to find his Best Man, which eventually leads him to Dave Negal, played by the always-affable Jason Segel.

While on the set of this hilarious new comedy, we got a chance to talk with both Rudd and Segel about their characters. Here is what they had to say:

You are playing the guitar in this. The guitar playing looked pretty good.

Jason Segel: Thanks, I was fakin' it. Don't tell (laughing). Though by the end I was pretty convinced that I was playing it correctly, however, I think, had you plugged in my guitar, it would have sounded like total nonsense.

Paul Rudd: I can't, I can play a couple of those songs though, I tried to learn "Limelight" on bass and "Tom Sawyer", and I figured out the very basic licks.
